We went through every independent café, restaurant, pub and takeaway trading in Beckenham and checked one thing: whether a website exists for it. 153 out of 163 have none.

That is not a criticism of anyone. Running a kitchen is a full day's work before anybody thinks about a website. But it does mean that when somebody in Beckenham picks up a phone and searches for somewhere to eat, what they find about most businesses is whatever Google has assembled on their behalf — a map pin, opening hours that may be wrong, and photographs the owner did not choose.

A decision gets made in those few seconds, and the business is not in the room for it.

Figures measured September 2026 across Bromley, Beckenham, Croydon, Orpington and West Wickham — 1,310 independent food and drink businesses in total, of which 1,240 had no website on record. A business with a Facebook or Instagram page but no website of its own is counted as having none, because neither turns up the way a website does when somebody searches your name.
